Building Seamless Identity Verification Across Five Markets

Client Overview

Fortuna Entertainment Group (FEG) is the leading omni-channel betting and gaming operator in Central and Eastern Europe. What began in 1990 as a local Czech company has grown into an international player, with operations today spanning five countries: the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Croatia, and Romania.

With more than 30 years of experience, FEG has become the largest betting and gaming company in the region, supported by a team of over 5,600 professionals. Their strength lies in delivering a consistent customer experience across every channel: online platforms, mobile applications, and hundreds of physical retail locations.

By continuously innovating and expanding their offerings, FEG provides engaging and responsible gaming experiences to millions of customers, reinforcing its position as one of the most trusted leaders in the industry.

Project Overview: Verification Across Borders

In February 2021, IDENTT was contacted by Fortuna Entertainment Group with a clear mission: streamline customer verification across all FEG subsidiaries.

Operating in the highly regulated gambling sector, FEG faced an increasingly complex onboarding reality. Every market came with its own legal requirements, document formats, and compliance rules, making customer registration both operationally heavy and frustrating for users.

The goal was ambitious:

  • automate the Know Your Customer (KYC) process
  • reduce manual intervention
  • improve registration success rates
  • ensure compliance across multiple jurisdictions

The existing system struggled particularly in markets where documentation was complex, error-prone, or inconsistent. The result: onboarding friction and lost customers at the very first step.

FEG needed a solution that could scale across borders without compromising security or user experience.

The Solution: Automation at Scale

IDENTT designed a fully automated identity verification system tailored to Fortuna’s multi-country environment.

The solution combined:

  • document verification
  • OCR-based data extraction
  • liveness detection (where required)
  • secure storage of customer data, photos, and videos

Behind the scenes, the platform was powered by a microservices-based architecture, including services for:

  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
  • data validation
  • liveness and facial verification
  • fraud prevention
  • compliant long-term storage

On the customer side, IDENTT developed a self-verify web frontend, allowing users to complete onboarding seamlessly without manual assistance.

To embed verification directly into Fortuna’s native apps, IDENTT also delivered an SDK integrated as a WebView, making identity checks feel like a natural part of the platform experience.

A critical part of the project was also ensuring continuity: IDENTT successfully migrated millions of document images from Fortuna’s previous provider into the new secure environment.

Local Complexity: One System, Five Very Different Markets

Every country brought its own verification challenges: requiring customization without breaking the unified platform approach.

Slovakia

The Slovak onboarding flow required multiple supporting documents, such as IDs, passports, and health insurance cards. Verification had to account for:

  • holograms interfering with OCR
  • low-quality photos
  • damaged documents, which were automatically rejected

Romania

Romanian IDs exist in multiple versions, sometimes one-sided, sometimes two-sided. Address parsing was another challenge, as Romanian addresses often include:

  • county and sector
  • building and apartment details
  • floor numbers and extended formatting

Poland

As a market leader in Poland, Fortuna required a simpler process focused on document verification only, without liveness detection.

Croatia

Croatia combined document verification with liveness checks and introduced unique document types, including two-sided passports with embedded OIB national identification numbers.

Delivery Approach: Managing Complexity Behind the Scenes

To keep development efficient across multiple markets, IDENTT used a hybrid delivery model:

  • Scrum for backend development
  • Kanban for delivering existing feature enhancements
  • Waterfall elements where regulatory requirements demanded structured rollout

A dedicated project manager served as the single point of contact (SPOC), ensuring smooth coordination across countries, teams, cultures, and technical stakeholders.

Technical Highlights

Several innovations were key to Fortuna’s success:

  • OCR with diacritical marks, essential for Central European languages
  • automatic error detection, rejecting unreadable or damaged documents
  • amplitude analytics integration, enabling UX optimization and A/B testing
  • document validation workflows, including fallback manual acceptance
  • mObywatel integration in Poland, supporting digital government IDs

Results: Faster Registration, Higher Automation

Although some KPIs were still being finalized at project completion, early indicators were strong.

Fortuna set targets to:

  • increase successful registrations by 6%
  • automate 80% of onboarding

The system achieved automation rates between 65% and 90%, depending on the market, driven by accurate OCR performance and reliable liveness checks.

For Fortuna, automation became more than an efficiency gain: it was a competitive advantage in markets where onboarding speed directly impacts customer acquisition.

As FEG shared:

“A very important advantage of IDENTT was the ability to OCR documents with diacritics. Our main goal is to register clients fully automatically without manual assistance… The percentage of fully automatic clients varies from 65% to 90%… We appreciate IDENTT’s flexibility to address all our needs in this dynamic environment.”

“IDENTT’s flexibility in addressing our specific needs across different markets has been instrumental in improving our registration process. We’ve seen automation rates improve significantly, and the process is much more user-friendly, which is key to maintaining our competitive edge.”

Behind the Scenes: The Unexpected Requirements

Some acceptance conditions were especially memorable. One rule was simple: the system must not accept Mickey Mouse as a human face. So of course, we had to test it.

Another non-negotiable? Customers couldn’t complete verification using a library card or any random document. And Croatia brought a unique compliance requirement: no nudity in liveness footage.

Since there’s no technology yet that can “dress” people, our team ensured the system automatically deletes any footage where no face is detected.

Conclusion: Identity Verification Built for Growth

The partnership between IDENTT and Fortuna Entertainment Group demonstrates how tailored automation can transform onboarding in one of the most regulated industries.

By combining advanced OCR, diacritic support, liveness detection, and flexible deployment across five legal environments, IDENTT delivered a solution that improved efficiency, strengthened compliance, and laid the foundation for Fortuna’s continued growth in customer acquisition.
